Beyond Procreation

Gods and Goddesses of many religious systems throughout history, whether pantheist, monotheist or otherwise, have a close relationship to androgyny. The first recorded pagan religious traditions, including Greek mythology, are pervaded with characters who are created by only one parent or some inanimate matter such as the ocean. Other figures may change sex depending on the needs of the situation or may choose to remain without sexual identity altogether.

Figures from major contemporary religious movements such as Jesus and Mary and the Hindu God Shiva also bear andrognous traits either in their creation of life, resurrection from death or literal combination of male and female attributes.
